A Board Certified Allergist is a physician who has completed a residency in either Pediatrics or Internal Medicine and an additional two years of specialized fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology, which focuses on the evaluation and management of allergic diseases. Following fellowship training, the physician must also successfully complete and pass an examination designed to test his or her knowledge and skills in the field. Even if he or she has completed a fellowship program, a physician may NOT be considered Board Certified if he or she has not successfully completed and passed the examination process. Both of the physicians at Allergy & Asthma Clinics of Ohio are Board Certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI).
A Board Certified Allergist is specifically trained to determine what triggers allergic reactions that can cause asthma, sinus troubles, seasonal allergies, food allergies and severe allergic reactions. Board Certified Allergists focus on preventative care and helping patients retain a quality of life that enables the continuance of activities which patients enjoy. This is why Board Certified Allergists are the best physicians to diagnose and treat allergies and asthma.
A Board Certified Allergist in Columbus Ohio differs from a Pulmonologist who focuses on treatment of lung diseases and frequently is in the hospital caring for patients who may require hospital treatment. A Board Certified Allergist is also different from an Ear, Nose and Throat physician who is specially trained on the surgical treatment of the upper airway.
To retain certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI), a Board Certified physician must be re-certified every ten years. Re-certification includes additional study on the latest topics and trends in Allergy, Asthma & Immunological care, successful completion of a re-certification examination as well as confirmation by the physician’s peers (other doctors) and current patients of the physician’s clinical abilities. Dr. Suri R. Suresh completed his re-Certification in 2005 and Dr. Sridhar Guduri is currently completing his re-Certification process.
